Bad Religion at the Key Club!

Bad ReligionI saw Bad Religion about a year ago at the Warfield in San Francisco with the Promise Ring. The Promise Ring really just did not fit my taste in music. To put it nicely, I thought they were horrible so, I left the crowd and wandered around through merchandise. To me opening bands are important. Without a good opening band, people are just sitting around getting pissed off and longing for the main act to come on. The show this Saturday, at the Key Club, in West Hollywood, gave my sights a nice contrast compared to the Bad Religion show I went to last year. The opening band, the Deviates, were much, much better, which kept me anxious for the rest of the expected to be amazing show. The Deviates are a young punk rock band from the South Bay, who had so much energy. They were young yet so good (in more ways than one).

Doors opened at 7pm with the show starting quite on the dot at 8pm. Epitaph bought out pretty much half the show while KROQ bought out the other half, leaving only a small amount of tickets to the general public (no wonder the show sold out in 2 Brian Bakerminutes). The guest list line was so long that the normal line was not visible. All three floors were packed with people throughout the entire show. The Deviates played a half hour set from 8-8:30 while Bad Religion played for about an hour from 9-10. Bad Religion’s 21 song set went through new and old, beginning with Suffer and ending with 21st Century (Digital Boy).

Bad Religion had a new energy to them with Mr. Brett back in the band. To finish the third of the trio of Bad Religion’s new record’s release shows, the band played a couple new songs such as Sorrow (stated as “BR’s most heart wrenching song”), Broken and Supersonic. They also kept the crowd alive with many old songs like Modern Man, American Jesus, Stranger Than Fiction, and Recipe For Hate. Every time an old song would be played, the crowd would go wild. I guess there were a lot of long time Bad Religion fans that night. There was one guy that kept yelling, “You suck”, “Faggot”. Why he was at the show, I do not understand. Bad Religion has been one of the best bands around for a long time. I cannot fathom anyone not liking them or maybe I am just biased since they are my favorite band! Even after all of those years they still put on an incredible show. Next time they are in town, go see them. ---Ashley-Kiana
