Barflies.net writers were asked to list what their top Five Songs of the Millenium (1000 AD to 2000 AD):

Alex's Picks:
Hour of Darkness - Social Distortion
You're So Vain - Carly Simon (don't ask)
Kermit The Frog - Rainbow Connection
Fast and frightning - L7
Bikeage - Descendents

Amber's Picks:
Top Fav. 5 songs of the past 1000 years. . . .
1. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (hey. . . it's a long song)
2. I Wanna Hold Your Hand - The Beatles
3. Radio Radio - Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4. London Calling - The Clash
and for the sheer hell of it . . . 5. Dancin' Queen - ABBA
Alternately - 5. Rocket to Russia - The Ramones (Sorry. . . this whole album cannot be split into which song influenced me more)

Erika's Picks:
Erika's very Un-Barflies Top 5 of the Millenium: in no particular order, from the latter half of the millenium. since i am not so familiar with really early music.
1) Handel's Messiah. this synthesis of faith and music transcends culture, time, inhibitions, language, and venue.
2) Ennio Morricone's Gabriel's Oboe from the Mission soundtrack. The closest to a perfect melody I've heard, and not as overexposed as Pachabel's Canon in D.
3) U2's The Joshua Tree. Still fresh after a thousand listens and 14 years.
4) Anything Louis Armstrong did, because not only did he define American music, but he also crossed a hell of a lot of color lines, boundaries and institutional rules. Does this make him the father of American punk, rock n roll, or any other rebel music? In that case, props also to whatever monk first started putting harmonies to chants, thus turning European music on its holy head and pissing off the Church.
This way I can safely also mention:
5) Amazing Grace (Isaac Watts) tied with Be Thou My Vision (Irish, 8th century)as the greatest hymns of all time. Ok, maybe I AM going to the early half of the millenium.

Jen's Picks:
